Matanzas Creek is located in the remote, but breathtakingly beautiful Bennett Valley region of Sonoma County. Since its launch in 1977, the winery has built its reputation on Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot – two varieties that thrive in Sonoma’s temperate climate. The winery's efforts flagged somewhat until the Jackson family bought it and began to resuscitate it. Those efforts are now paying off with improved quality. This wine is lovely! The barely aggressive bouquet is followed by a balanced, delicious rendition of Sauvignon Blanc. Robert Parker: 88 ($22) “Coming from all the estate vineyards, this wine is 20% fermented in neutral oak and has a touch of Semillon and a clone of Sauvignon Blanc (Musqué) added for more flowery and exotic notes. It offers light to medium body and pretty, caramelized grapefruit and floral notes with melons. It is dry, crisp, zesty, and ideal for drinking over the next several years. More promising wines seem to be emerging from Matanzas Creek Winery, which was acquired some time ago by the Jackson family and has been a work in progress ever since.”
